     | Lahaina was once the
capital of the whole Hawaiian kingdom, then an important whaling town and
missionary center, making it one of Hawaii's most historic places. Visit Wainee
Cemetery, the sacred burial ground of the Hawaiian kings, view the ancient Hale
Paahao stone prison, or shop for scrimshaw carvings and raku pottery for which
the area is famous. Don't miss the huge banyan tree and the unique items made of wood
that you find in the local shops.
