Sitting on the banks of the River Warnow and the Baltic shore,
Rostock is a turntable for travelers and goods to and from
Scandinavia and the Baltic countries. In fact, it is the German
Baltic’s largest port. The city presents an intriguing
architectural mix: medieval and 1950s architecture in the center,
modern housing blocks and 19th-century villas in some of the
suburbs. The cityscape of Rostock has been shaped by eight centuries of eventful history. Starting out as a North German market-place for merchants and craftsmen, Rostock soon became the largest and most important city in Mecklenburg and Western Pomerania. It wrestled privileges from the feudal princes such as free passage to the Baltic Sea, the coining privilege and full jurisdiction over its own affairs. The decline of the Hanseatic League in the Middle Ages, a devastating fire and several wars took their toll. In the 18th- and 19th-centuries Rostock was revived by an upswing of trade and commerce. The industrial mainstays of the city are marine shipping, ship-building and fishing. The city also has opened up to new high-tech industries in recent years. |
