        | Standing on an island, Santos is best known
for its commerce, but it is also a holiday resort with magnificent beaches,
plenty of shops, and a very relaxed, friendly atmosphere. One of the city's
most attractive features is the Orchid Gardens. This serene and shady oasis
boasts a wide variety of lush, tropical vegetation, a bird sanctuary and an
open-air cage containing humming birds of 20 different species. Santos serves as the gateway to Sao Paulo. Sao Paulo lays claim to have
long surpassed Rio as Brazil's cultural center, and is home to a lively
    music and arts world.
 Caution: Beware of pickpockets
around the beaches and on crowded sidewalks. Don't wear expensive watches or
jewelry or carry large sums of money on you when going ashore.

        | Shopping. As a popular resort, Santos boasts
plenty of shops. Items such as leather articles, semi-precious and
precious stones, ceramics and coffee are popular buys. The most
convenient shopping can be found in the mall across from the Hotel
        Parque Balneario. |
        | Cuisine. The restaurant at the Hotel Parque
Balneario may be your best bet. Otherwise, a variety of local
restaurants offer a choice of seafood, barbecue-style meats, and fast
food. Stay away from leafy salads, and make sure your food is well
cooked. Drink only bottled water and beverages. |

museum in a private house. Museo de Mar features an unusual collection
of relics connected to the life in and around the ocean. There is also a
        good quality gift shop.

vacationers from Sao Paulo,  runs the length of the Avenida
Presidente Wilson in the center of downtown Santos.
