         The 
    small town of São Francisco do Sul was established in the middle of the 17th 
    century; it is one of the oldest settlements in the state of Santa Catarina. 
    It is also one of the few places where colonial and 19th-century buildings 
    remain standing side by side. The town is located on a low-lying island of 
    the same name, connected to the mainland by a causeway spanning the narrow 
    strait. 
 The port lies a short distance from the town center. Visitors can explore 
    the colonial part of town with its main focus around the central square. In

        Pier Information. The ship is scheduled to 
        dock. The center of town can be reached on foot in about 15 minutes. 
        Taxis are usually available at the pier. Remember to negotiate the fare

        shopping opportunities, guests may want to browse and may find 
        interesting buys in crystal, which is a highly regarded product 
        manufactured in the town of Blumenau.  |

        Cuisine. Check local restaurants and hotels 
        for seafood and typical Brazilian cuisine. Among Brazilian favorites are 
        barbecued meats and feijoada, a wonderful mix of rice, black beans, 
        pork, beef, and greens. For beer, try Antarctica or Brahma. Drink only 
        bottled water and beverages. Avoid ice.  |

        Sights 
        Igreja Matriz. Dominating the main square, the church originally 
        was built by the Indian slaves in 1655; later it was completely 
        reconstructed. 
        Museu Historico. The town’s former prison was in use until 1968; 
        it now houses a museum featuring displays of old photographs and 
        historical items of the town’s colonial era. Labels are only in 
        Portuguese. 
        Beaches. Paulos or Dos Ingleses are the nearest beaches to town, 
        just about a mile to the east. The protected calm waters are ideal for 
        swimming.
